Six port cities in Japan, led by Yokohama, are testing a shared feed that sends tsunami warnings to ships, port workers and nearby residents at the same moment.

Until now each port ran its own alert system. Officials say the trial cut the time between a national warning and a ship's alarm to under 30 seconds.

The trial runs until March, with a report due in the spring.
