Calgary city council has approved 14 kilometres of protected bike lanes in the downtown core, linking the river pathway system to offices, schools and the East Village.

The 10-4 vote followed a year-long trial on two corridors. City counts show weekday trips on those streets rose by about a third, while reported collisions involving cyclists fell.

Business groups asked for loading zones to be kept on every block, and the final plan adds 22 of them. Construction is set to start in April and finish before the end of next year.

Councillors who voted against said the city should wait for a review of road maintenance costs.
