Forty European cities have agreed to publish heat warnings in the same format from next summer, after a meeting of city officials in Brussels.

The shared format sets out the warning level, the hours it applies and where people can find cool spaces. Officials say it will let phone apps and news sites show alerts from different cities side by side.

Several Canadian cities have asked to join the working group as observers.
